Garage Cabinets

Whether we are talking about a residential garage or a commercial garage, the cabinets are an integral and essential part. If you are using these cabinets on a regular basis to store tools or other various equipment, it is only natural they will be subject to wear and tear due to usage and environmental conditions. You want your garage cabinets to last a very long time, so here are some tips to increase the longevity of your garage cabinets.

Material and Installation

The very first factor that impacts the lifespan of your cabinets is what type of material was used. The second factor is how well the cabinets were installed. These go hand in hand. For material you can choose from wood, engineered wood, particle board, plywood, metal, plastic, melamine, and many more. Wood itself has different grades. Metal is durable but susceptible to rust. Wood is beautiful but subject to warping damage. Plastic is the easiest to maintain but may not withstand heavy loads and prolonged rough-and-tough use.

Regular Cleaning

This cannot be emphasized enough! Dusting and cleaning may seem like a chore, but it is the number one secret to keeping your cabinets looking like-new, and retaining their functionality.

Never use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads because it causes scratches and dulls the surface. Microfiber cloths are the best because not only are they lint-free, but they are also easily washable and will not mold even if you throw them in a corner and forget about them!

For wood cabinets, use products that are recommended specifically for wood. Metal and plastic/melamine cabinets can be cleaned with warm water and a mild detergent.

Beware of Moisture

Your garage is not a temperature-controlled space. So it is typical that your garage cabinets will be exposed to heat, cold, and moisture. If you have wood cabinets, moisture will cause them to warp, swell, or even get mold. Metal cabinets are prone to rust due to moisture.

Make sure you keep your garage well-ventilated. Use fans and dehumidifiers routinely. You may even consider installing your cabinets in a way so that they don’t come in contact with the garage floor. This is to avoid any dampness seeping through the floor.

Don’t Overload and Organize Wisely

Your garage cabinets have a weight limit. Exceeding it will cause strain on the hinges and shelves. You may start to see sagging shelves, and over time, you’ll find the structural integrity of the shelf has been compromised. See that you distribute weight evenly by arranging items evenly across the shelves. Put heavier items on the lower shelves or in the back.

Think about using shelf liners, to protect the inner finish of your cabinet and drawers. Be mindful when you store or take out sharp objects so that they don’t scratch the inner or outer surface of your cabinet.

Consistent Inspections and Maintenance

It’s expected that your garage cabinets will incur normal wear and tear. There will be spills and bumps, causing dents, scratches, and more. The idea is to keep an eye on things and repair issues in a timely manner before they become major problems.

One example is if you see a scratch or gouge on your metal cabinet, apply some paint or a rust preventive coating immediately, to stop that area from rusting. For drawers and doors, make sure the hinges and handles are in good working order. Tighten screws and bolts as necessary. Some of these may seem insignificant, but in the long run, these are the habits that will ensure the long life of your garage cabinets.

Keep Your Garage Pest-Free

Pest infestations can be an annoying problem in a garage. Rodents and insects can create their nests in your cabinets and cause severe damage. Not only are their droppings gross, but they can gnaw on your cabinets and cause irreparable damage. Don’t leave food out. If you must have snacks or drinks while working in the garage, clean up after you’re done. Seal gaps and holes. Natural repellents could be an option, and in extreme cases, using traps.
